Hi Brenda,

I think that part of the problem is that people are not merely disagreeing about what the definition of EA is, they fundamentally disagree about what EA actually is (or should be). People disagree about what is good EA and even about what things are EA and what are not. EA is what I would call an "essentially contested concept" - like art.

Putting that aside - while I like the main themes in EA you are identifying, I don't think that they are necessarily correct for all enterprises (though they will be for most). For example in businesses that don't change then agility and ease of change are not things that your architecture should be optimising. If your business is not cost-sensitive then better tech ROI may not be particularly important - perhaps something else like safety is instead. I think that the particular outcomes that EA needs to maximise are dependent on the particular context of your business, which is why understanding what makes your organisation "tick" is so important to EA. So I would favour a characterisation of EA that is more generic. Something like: a discipline for maximising business effectiveness through the use of architectural techniques.
