First up, Lauren States, VP of Cloud Computing, IBM Software Group, on the Next Era of Cloud Computing -- Enabling Growth & Innovation.
Lauren begins with Smarter planet, the world is changing, becoming smarter and more instrumented, interconnected and intelligent.
First cloud computing definition of the day: "cloud is an emerging consumption and delivery model for many IT-based services, in which the user sees only the service, and has no need to know anything about the technology or implementation".
Attributes of cloud: standardized, consumable, web-deliverable services, elastic scaling, flexible pricing, metering & billing, advanced virtualization, and rapid provisioning.
Public vs. Private Clouds. Some say private cloud is oxymoron.
From consumer perspective, Public clouds offer standardization, capital preservation, flexibility and time to deploy. Private clouds offer customization, efficiency, availability, resiliency, security and privacy. Choice will depend on organization, culture, and governance.
New IBM research group Cloud service taxonomy, top to bottom, people services (collaboration, location), business services, application services, platform services, infrastructure services.
Service sourcing models. IBM is doing research on types of workloads that are best match for the cloud. Not an all or nothing strategy. Delivery model is not all public or all private. Strategy should allow you to rapidly and dynamically deliver business and IT services at lower cost.
Why is cloud hot from business point of view? $$$
Cloud-o-nomics: virtualization + energy efficiency + standardization + automation (service management) = reduced cost
IBM internal example, 83.8% reduction in annual cost of operation. Shared customer example that had 10-month payback. Important to note that IBM keeps good baseline (run rate) numbers, not all organizations do.
Service management for center for cloud computing, upcoming announcement at Pulse (Tivoli) conference.
IBM's journey to cloud: Centralize, Consolidate, Virtualize, Automate, Optimize. Starting point depends on where you are today.
Most organizations, 70%, are at consolidate and virtualize. We need to be mindful to solve those to get to state of IT services supply chain and service management.
Industry challenges: standards & portability, security & privacy, hybrid sourcing management and governance.
